Small Title

1. Setting the Scene

A casual glance one day at the May 1996 issue of "Garden Rail" magazine made me realise that I was doing it all wrong...! My model railway should be in the garden, not in the house. It should be much bigger, and steam should provide the motive power. Ever impatient, I started planning and construction straight away. Here, some six months later, locomotive "Kitten" stands on the station slip in full steam patiently awaiting the up starting signal.

In Summer, the Spiraea forming the background to this photograph forms a mass of small white flowers. My aim is for the railway and garden shrubs and plants to complement each other - providing scenic refuge from life's tribulations. I don't think the railway will ever be finished - plans for extending the track are already brewing. It feels great to complete each new stage, or on a lazy day just to watch the trains trundle by in a garden setting.
