F501: Motor & Transmission

The combined motor/gearbox unit has been fitted and power supply wires soldered on. Drive is applied to the rear axle as it was on the prototype loco, with the front axle driven through the connecting rods.

The unit relies on the axle for its main support. I tried bolting the gearbox to the frame but this resulted in marked coarseness and vibration when running. Rotational movement of the motor/gearbox assembly is restricted by a contact plate mounted underneath the gearbox.

The contact plate underneath the bogie frame has been positioned to allow just a little rotational movement of the motor/gearbox assembly. This small amount of play seems to assist smooth running.
